A Lesson in Tools

As I write this post, I am somewhat annoyed. Vyvyan is in need of some TLC and I was all up for it. Upon getting the tools and environment ready for the main job, I came across a problem. To make it clearer, I need to service the near side brake caliper. For this, I needed:

  • Copper Grease
  • Silicon Grease
  • 2t Jack
  • 2t Axle Stand
  • Piston Spreader
  • Rubber Gloves
  • Wheel Nut Wrench (AKA Lug Wrench)
  • SOCKETS!
  • SPANNERS!

You might look and say, ‘Why are sockets and spanners, capitilised?’ Well, that’s because I am currently spreading my tools across two sites. This created a problem in that my SOCKETS are not here! Without them, I thought, let’s do it another way. Looking for my Wheel Nut Wrench, I would remove the wheel and use spanners to loosen the caliper. Well, another issue arose. The wrench was at the other site, too! Joy!

Once I had calmed, I decided to try and repair the horn. Taking it off would require a 10mm spanner. Guess which one isn’t here… All the others, just not 10mm! What is the lesson in all of this? I have been planning to bring all of my mechanical tools together, in one trolley. After picking up a free trolley at the tip, I am now going to accelerate the refurb of it. Doesn’t need a lot, but with all the tools in, I am sure it will stop this from happening, again. Well, I certainly hope it will. The lesson to you…make sure you have it all together before you waste time readying the situation. I have at least done the engine fluids, cleaned the inside of the steering wheel and fixed the loose weather trim on the driver’s door. How’s that?
