A Shed is Born

It’s time to get mentioning my latest shed. I picked it up, in a state, in the autumn of 2023. The roof and floor were broken, the locks were rusted and the inside was no better than a holed tarpaulin. So, for the grand total of £50, I squeezed it into my van. This could only be done by taking the top section off from above the door.

Once I got it home, it sat for a few weeks whilst I cleared the rough patio that I had laid; it would now become the base for the shed to sit on. To start the rebuild, I needed to create the job list:

  • Swap panels that had broken when it was taken apart,
  • Replace the roof with a completely new build,
  • Do the same for the flooring,
  • Add an electric extension,
  • Put a solar panel on the roof.

This certainly wasn’t exhaustive, it will need to be painted and new locks applied. But the show must go on.

I began by building the floor. I used 18mm marine-ply to make it as strong as possible. This was over the top, but I was happy to pay the extra few pounds for it. Once I had painted the underside, to give it longevity, I placed it onto the slabs and began repairing the walls.

When The new shiplap boarding was done, the top was rebuilt and a few of the uprights had to be replaced. I fitted the walls to the floor and got ready for the roof. This was done in a similar way to the floor, but with 11mm ply, instead. I fitted it, then added the felt with clout nails.

The added interior was done and the panel placed on the roof. Some 12v lighting was put in with a mains switch to control it. This was a good day’s work, with it being a little easier if you have an extra pair of hands.

Plans for it are unsure. It was originally going to e a Lego space, but I am now going to use it for storage and a photographic studio. For that, I am going to add a green screen and a fixed camera space. Let’s see where it goes, or what it becomes.

Price List:

  • Shed £50
  • Timber £70
  • Felt £30
  • Fixing £12
  • Solar Panel was already in the shed.
    • Total Cost: £162 + Travel etc.

A new shed would have cost more than twice this, especially as this was a 7×5 model. I am pleased with what it cost, even if it was a headache to get it home.
