Set Review – 21357 Disney Pixar Luxo Jr.

I can remember first seeing this ident in 1995. Watching Toy Story was a gateway into a new film idea. Unlike 2025, there was still new ideas to be had. The lamp is seen moving along the Pixar logo, and then bouncing on the ‘I’ in the name. It then squashes it and looks at the camera. This particular set is based on the little version of Luxo. This original logo lamp was derived from a short animation, in 1986, that had a father and son, lamp, duo. This was aptly named, Luxo Junior, and would go on to encapsulates the characters, beautifully.

The overall build is not for the faint of heart. It mixed Technic and Basic, harder than most that I have seen before. As it is not a play thing, I would imagine the younger Pixar lovers would prefer the new Train and RC Celebration Set, as they can play on the carpet with it. There is a strange use of studs to bolster the building regiment. Colours are heavily applied to get things in the right place. This is often a sign that a set is a little more difficult than others.

You won’t find this to be anything more than a display piece. It is designed, beautifully so, for collectors and those that, young and old, that want a part of Pixar on a shelf, but not the characters that are normally associated with it. I opted to have it sitting on the ball, but this means you need to remove the upper and lower panels of the said ball, to achieve it. I have put them to one side, and can see the need to have Jr. being the character he is portrayed as in his short.

It isa good one hour build, but this can be extended if you are steady when creating the framework. There is a nice Easter Egg in the set, but I won’t be the one to ruin it, as I was surprised by it, and loved that I didn’t know about it, before. If you love Disney Pixar, this is a beautiful mid-level gift for an avid builder that likes the odd, quirky set to be released. They have uses some small, grey, rubber-bands to add tension to the frame, and this works great. I am a happy builder, and thank you to Steph for getting me it. Well recommended, with a high score due to the price-point, and build fun, being spot-on!
