Last week, I saw these in the window of my local charity shop. They sat in the window with the one, sitting behind the other. As the shop was closed, I couldn’t see which one it was. I knew from the red bricks that these were from the mid to late 60s. Like my 50’s box, these are like a matchbox, a keen eye can see the trend for small toys from this era. Even through the window, you could see the limit of their condition, having a clear ‘Glyn’ written on the front. So, today, I went in…

As usual, the shop used overly-sticky price labels, for which when asked about them, the manager went on the offensive. This was not a nice experience. I still grabbed them, as I have a fascination with pre-80s Lego sets. The fences were a nice find, even having an original Bagnall’s price label on its back. This was a toy and model shop that used to be in Stafford centre. It was the highlight of a trip to Stafford when I was a young lad. The Bagnall name is most famous for work in the rail industry, creating steam and electric locomotives in Castletown, Stafford. This would later be taken over by English Electric.

They are sealed, and will remain so. I need to workout a safe removal of the said labels, so I really don’t want to make it worse by pulling the sticky tape off. I look at this post as a recording of my find, and to gain another couple of older sets is such a great thing. I paid £15 for each of these. The labels have diminished this, a little, but they are sitting at an average price. Being from the 60s, they are a little less valuable than the older one that I have. However, it’s about my love of these and not what they can sell for, so it really doesn’t matter. The name on the front, the smell and the feel of the cardboard are just magic, they hold so much memory of playtimes, passing through hands for the last sixty years. That is worth it, all on its own!
