Set Review – 60402 Monster Truck

I had been looking at this set for a week or so, when I decided to take the plunge. At £12.99, it is at an average price for this type of set. The build is well designed, with a nice colour palette. You get the option of having the helmet on the minifigure, with the hair ready to swap, should he take it off and reveal his chiselled looks and stubbled face.

I was taken aback by the amount of Technic. There were three bags, in all, and the third one had the wheels and Technic pieces. I have commented before about the hybridisation of Lego sets, with a mix of Basic and Technic being the standard in the modern age. I love this and have seen the potential of Technic for many years. At one point in the past, I only collected Technic sets, so seeing this happen was a breath of normality.

They have once again kept to only having printed bricks. I am keen to see this, as the accessibility of it is good to work with. There is also the bonus of it being machine placed; even the steadiest of hands can struggle to place a sticker in the centre.

As a rule, these sets are always fun to build. They make great display pieces, with nice colours and great build innovation. I enjoy getting my hands on City sets, as they are always finding new ways to form everyday objects. You also get to see some fabulous ‘sundry’ bricks. Ones that come to mind in other sets are croissants and mobile phones. In this set, I like the simplicity of the rear cage strutts. Pushed onto a 1×2 ‘single’ hook plate and then moved back to touch the upper part of the cab, works very well. It’s a nerd-like joy, but pleasing, nonetheless. Happy times.

First Impressions – A well rounded set with printed tiles and no stickers.

Price-Point – Average

Time to Build – 30-40 Minutes

Score: 8/10
