The Blessing of the Street Light

I have written some strange post thoughts over the past eighteen months. This one shouldn’t disappoint with it being about street lights, of all things. We are so used to these being on the edges of our pavements, that they pass us by without a thought. It stands to reason that they have grown in technology. The biggest of these will be in efficiency. There was always talk about them being turned off to save energy, but many argued that they are for safety, too. This is a good point and has to be the key focus for why making them use less energy became an important factor in their development.

Look at that head, all the way up there!

Looking up at them, they are tall, they stand so high that you have to stand back to see the very top of their heads. Even now, you still see them with the pimple on top. This is a light sensor and tells the light to switch on when it gets dark enough. The heads, themselves, have become smaller, yet brighter, using LEDs to provide clear, efficient and broad light sources. As a kid, I remember the concrete posts. These were much shorter, and had a bowl like head, with a hat, atop. They are all now super tall with a beak like snout for a noggin. As you pass, just think about how they have changed and what they offer us. It’s somehow fascinating in its own boring ideal. You could say that might be the light of my life!
