At some point during the weekend of 23rd/24th November, 2024, Somebody decided that they should destroy an amazing piece of film history. If you have ever been to Shrewsbury (I was born there,) you may know about a Christmas film that was made there. In the mid-eightes, a version of A Christmas Carol was created, featuring George C. Scott. Shrewsbury’s old-style aesthetic was used to give the film its expected look. They used the square, the old hospital, in St. Mary’s Place, and St. Chad’s Church. This is where is goes downhill.
During filming, they added Scrooge’s grave to th St. Chad’s yard, just to the back of the church. Upon the closure of filming, they left this behind. It was used for the ‘Ghost of Christmas, Yet to Come‘ scene. This story is my favourite narrative, and I have been to this grave, many times. As a piece of modern history, it is important to Shrewsbury, and now, it has been desecrated. Even though the broken section is a prop, it is still an act of vandilism, to both it, and the church’s yard.
I wanted to write about it and bring it to the attention of others, as it was special and is now broken up due to people who have NO respect. Whoever you are, shame on you! Here is an article from the BBC. I am not sure if it will ever be the same, as even a rebuild will not be the original. Sad times!
