The Quick Roller Fix

There are many different applications that I intend to install in my workshop, but one of the simplest ones, is a place to put the roll of paper for wiping my hands, etc. With this, I set about using my vise for the first time. The end result looks fine, and was built from scraps.

Materials:

  • Old cot spindle
  • Chunk of old wood
  • 2 x Large washers
  • 2 x Screws
  • 2 x Small L-bracket

Tools:

  • Saw
  • Vise
  • Rasp
  • Drill

Taking the old piece of wood, I placed it in the vise and cut two pieces from it. These would form the brackets for the spindle, so needed to be the same size. I cut out the notches, all in the vise, and set them aside after rasping them and partially smoothing them off. I then clamped the spindle and drilled the ends, added the washers with the screws and set it up to add the brackets. The small L-brackets would fasten it to the boarding on the wall. The washers would hold the spindle in the notches.

This is a simple design, but was a great use of some old wood and took a little over ten minutes to make. It will serve its purpose and is just right for the current roll of paper. Not a bad little project, if I do say so myself.

Extra: As of the 22nd of March, I found that the paper would blow around in the wind. So, I decided to add a bar across the front. This holds the paper down and keeps it from unfurling. Another spindle and two straightened L-brackets later, and this was the end result. There is still a little more that could be done to keep it still, but this has made it a lot better.
