Set Review – 60431 Space Explorer Rover

Upon picking this up, I could see what I was in for. I love the aesthetic of it, looking like a cross between Space Engineers and Subnautica. The colour schemes and figure outfits have been pleasing, and my next set will be the small Science Lab. For now, let’s look at this set. The larger rover set (60432) is a little more fantastical, but this looks like a smaller, but fiestier alternative. With the current 20% discount at my local store, This was less than £20, giving me more than £6 of savings from the Lego site.

From the start, the first bag is all about set dressing. The aliens are very cute, but be warned, there is a huge temptation for putting the alien heads onto the minifigure suits. This alone begins the epic build that would make it a phenomenal gift for a child. Even at the higher price, this is a bargain set and shows that Lego can produce products that give a sense of real value. There are a few distinct pieces in this, too, different colours that I have not seen used on specific parts, before. It has a sense that whoever designed this one, was on the ball from the very start.

The rover has a few nice touches. There is a small hold in the back for the mini-rover and it sports two seats, meaning that as a play set, you won’t have to leave anybody behind when traversing the Moon’s landscape. The rear wheels are on independent twist-bars. These allow for movement over objects, adding to the play session’s realism. Once I saw that there were springs for the front wheels, this was sold, ten times over!

Looking at the images, you can see some decisions that were made to add strength. The first quarter of the build creates a misguided image of the end result, making the outcome feel very fresh and unexpeccted. Children and adults will love working on this. I did wonder how the wheels would sit strong on it’s base, especially on the rear end, but once they added the under-pins, it was sorted. I am keen to get my hands on the larger rover, if for nothing else, for a comparrison of value. I feel that there will only be dry eyes when offered this, and more than half the price of the larger version. This is simpy wonderful, Lego, it’s a great one, and I am sure it will sell very well. Happy times!
