Measuring, Further than Normal…

When we measure things, it is more often with a rule or a small tape measure. It’s rare that we will get the length of something more than a couple of metres. What if you need more than that? What applications need a better length for measurements? You tend to find that in the real world, we need up to six or seven metres for measuring rooms. But the key application I needed to overcome, was with 3D models. These are also more in the one-hundred centimetre range, but when it comes to modelling a building, you need a longer tape to get that accurate mesh.

When I built the Doxey Pyramid, I got the measurements from it and went from there. This only scaled to about 1.5m, but when it came to ideas that involved large sites, a trundle-wheel was in order. This was great to run along the edges. It still needed a tape to get accuracy, but it was a simple outcome. I no longer own this tool, but it was a great find, at the time. I now like to use a 20m tape-roll, usually made of fabric. This is easier to carry, and can be recorded to smaller units. I would say that a wheel is a great investment, many using them for landscaping their gardens, too. Quite the ideal!
