Find: Silverlit Neo R/C Robot

This was an interesting grab off of Gumtree. You can still purchase these for £30 at Smyths Toys and it is quite a sweet toy. As a lover of Robots and everything that is toy-like, I adore this little fellow. Having had a short play with it, it is a simple foot-shuffler, using wheels on the souls of its feet to move along. Even so, it makes the movement of walking, so it is still great to see roaming about. Key features are:

  • Moves with a controller or hand-gestures
  • Makes robotic noises
  • Walks and dances
  • Shutsdown until requested
  • Two programmable arrays for setting up events

It also skates, and with both forward buttons pressed down, it will glide along at speed. The controller is simple, but effective. There is a dance button, which turns Neo into funky-dude, and a programming button, allowing you to setup a two staged events. It stands at a fair 45cm, getting close to half-a-metre. a small child would easily be matched by this little-chap.

Battery hatch is on the back.

Overall, it is simple, but is a fabulous robot companion for a child. I only paid a fiver for this immaculate one, and it is all but in its box. The instructions were found online, without a problem, too. Due to it still being available, it is on the Silverlit website. I have looked at other Silverlit priducts, before. They are always well made and see the test-of-time. On its first test, I likened it to a Bee-Bot from schools. Although simple in programming, it is still a way to teach the young how to create a flow of directions. This is one of my ‘core’ ideas from years ago. This looks at how STEAM can be linked to the core-subjects. There will be more on that in the future. For now, this bot is a great, a must for all toy-bot lovers.
