As we are seeing a rise in costs for food, it is ever more aparent that we start to find more home-based ideals to get the sustenance that we need. Steph has been hard at work, and with the assistance of our Bec, been able to start the process of sowing and harvesting food. The first eats have been little tomatoes, but the past weeks have seen potatoes on the plate. They taste so good and remind me of my childhood and the produce that used to come from my parent’s garden. This post is partially about the outcomes of a gardener’s hard work, but mostly about the methods in which we plant them.

There are so many different containers that can be used for starting to grow. After picking up an old bath for our german shepard, Frankie, we realised that we could use another for planting larger crops. It hit a head when we pulled up in a back lane, close to home, and slid an old, but fantastic, roll-top bath into the back of Vyvyan. From there, the use of tyres has become normal. They are water proof sided, and have a large drainage hole. They can sit anywhere and it keeps them from going into the waste system. Old plastic storage boxes are good, as long as they drilled with a few drainage holes, and aren’t too brittle. You could always nail some wood into a box shape, but there is so much to try out and reuse from inside the house and shed.

Have you even planted into a random receptacle? What other choices are there? Either way, the food is so much nicer, especially after the effort that has gone into it…sprinkle a bit of love into it, and it’s the best! A most excellent effort, my dear Stephy!
