Big machines are cool! That should do for whole post, really! This set is a short build, with some great playability. Technic has always offered a more trickier build, but you can make more intricate offerings, if you are willing to challenge yourself. I was surprised at the available prices for this, as it is officially licensed in it being a John Deere machine. You can see from the artwork, it is donned in the usual yellow and green livery seen on the farm. Becuase of that, it offers playability beyond the build. The range allows for some active workings, and thus, the carpet work yard suddenly becomes ready for felling and harvesting!
Opening up the box, there are placky-bags, and a sense of many pieces, all thrown together! Upon its build, I found that was not as good as I had hoped. It is spindly and I really don’t believe that it is a, good, 7+, Technic set. There are the usual fiddly parts, but this feels very like is a rushed design with the working only being a way to raise and lower the boom arm. The claw is manual, using the rubber bushing to add grip when holding a the brown beam, that is meant to be a log. the green and yellow, colouration, is well placed for the John Deere branding, but there are stickers, sadly.
It’s only a small set, but there are many more that can provide a good sense of play, without the feeling of it falling apart or just not holding the John Deere badge with the expectation of the machines in mind. It feels like a licence grab with a basic build and toy, thrown in. Compared to the bulldozer set, it has the same mechanism offering, with less of the bulk! I wouldn’t recommend this, it is one of those sets, that if bought as a gift, would likely end up in a drawer and donated to charity, when they’ve grown older. A shame, but there always has to be some that don’t hit the mark.
First Impressions – A small but fiesty set. There’s more than just the build with this one.
