It’s a glorious Bank Holiday in the UK, so I thought I’d write a quick post to talk about safety. The word can conjure up images of over-control and pandering, but it should be giving you images born from common sense. I think back over the years and realise the many injuries I’ve had due to ill safety management. They are, of course, a learning measure for growing up, but there have been anecdotes that come from others.

A friend of mine worked for a manufacturer in the mid-90s. He was ill equiped and got a shard of metal in the eye . It was only small, but punched into the edge of his ball. By all accounts he was lucky, as he kept his sight and learned a lesson. It took a while to heal, but could have been avoided with a simple pair of safety-specs.
My biggest downfall has always been gloves. I never really bothered with them, just getting on with the job at hand. In my aged years, I now use gloves 90% of the time. Although it should be 100% of the time, it makes for better than 0%! The other problem is using your hands as mallets. It is not good! I’ve done it for years and have since purchased a dead-blow hammer. It’s worth every penny and will save you potentially serious ailments, in the future.

Whatever you are doing, keep yourself safe. It belongs in the now AND in the future. Consider how you will be in twenty years time. Do you want to be crippled by ill choices, missing fingers or blind? The answer should always be NO! I promote safety more, now, than ever before. Take it on advice; wear the safety-specs and hard-hat, don those gloves and boots, keep your eyes open and look around you, it might be the best decision you will ever make!
