Set Review – 21266 The Nether Lava Battle

I generally find that these, small, Minecraft sets are a little basic, but offer a small amount of building and playing. It sits in the price range that is great for pocket-money and for birthday party gifts. I do think that a lover of Minecraft, for which I am one, can see the ‘play potential’ in them. This one is like a small battle-pack, set on the fields of lave, down in The Nether. In the box, there is the usual Steve figure, along with a Skeleton enemy, a Strider and a Blaze. Just like the art shows you, they want you ride that Strider, into battle! There is also the addition of a basic mechanism for dropping a cube out of the hole via a lava flow.If you have played, or follow, Minecraft, this will all make sense…honestly!

It comes in placky-bags, so that was a poor start, but the colours jump out, immediately. This set, quickly shows you that it is all about the figures. If you have made battle-pack style of set, in the past, then you will be accustomed to this. Each figure is done in turn, with the scenery being an after thought. I like that the movement of the dirt block will start the lava flow, even if it can get stuck in the upright position. It will serve well as a time burner, at least for a small time. I could see this being a small accessory to the large sets in the range. I’m just not sure how you can put this under the over-world buildings…it is in the dark depths of a hell-like environment, after all.

It doesn’t inspire a lot to say; no stickers is a help, though. The best part is the Strider! This is a sweet little sub-build with waggly legs and a sad face. It even comes ready with its own saddle, so riding it is the top priority for our Steve! Want a simple grab and build, with the possibility of adding to your other sets, then it’s great, otherwise, it’s very, meh!

First Impressions – Always a little bit basic, but Minecraft is fun!
