The Research Pay-Off

It seems that whatever I do, I will do research before I begin any task. It doesn’t really matter what it is, I need to know more. The problem comes when there is more to learn than you realise. The general practise is as simple as following A to B to C, but there are always tricks and tips that lay underneath. (You can find the post that links to this one, here.)

The fitting goes up through the knuckle and likes to stay there!

As an addition to the post that will soon be placed on the site, I have had problems with a balljoint change on Vyvyan. I know what needs to be done, I have the correct parts and have had a job getting the correct tools, but it’s all there ready to get on with. After the kerfuffle of gathering tools, including two runs to the shop, I still found that I had missed something.

After trying to split the balljoint by loosening the knuckle, it would not budge. Prying, hitting and jacking did nothing. With a painful back and neck, I had to put it all back together after an hour of trying. The problem was quite simple, I needed ANOTHER tool to force it apart. What a day! I learned something from this. If you think you have researched enough, keep going! Using a jack to force it doesn’t work on all vehicles. Much of what I saw showed the fitting in slightly different orientations. I lost count of the different tricks I had a go at, but needless to say, they didn’t work, at all.
