NIMBY – A Conundrum!

If you have looked at a wind turbine and thought, ‘Mmmm, they look like big flowers,’ then you think like me. I appreciate the issue of having large metal towers filling up the countryside, but what if they are out salvation? In the UK, we are consistently stunted by people not wanting renewable energy next to them. The modern media refers to these as, ‘NIMBYs.’ (Not In My Back Yard.) Any time a nuclear plant is planned, locals will drop on it and shut it down. I ask the question: Is it becuase of the environment, or is it becuase of the value of your property?

This is not a finger-pointing exercise, but a simple request for reflection. Is it right that we fall into darkness and keep on the gas link that forever binds us? How will the next quarter-century pan out? The resource wars have already started, and we need to build ways of creating electricity that will fuel our future’s society. How would you solve this? I hope that politicians of the future can find a middle-ground, but until then, we have to just hope that we won’t be wandering in the darkness.
