The Vyvyan Diaries – Backwards Compatible

With the new media system running well, I want to complete the installation by adding the included reversing camera to Vyv. Looking at the back of her, I note that there is a few options to place the camera, but not ones that will give the camera less chance of wobbling from the engine’s vibration. These options are:

  • Directly on the bumper, where it would be fixed to the plastic.
  • Fastened to the main towing plate, but this is thick and will be a pain to drill the holes.
  • High up by the third-brake-light, but this will look messy!

Putting these aside, I decided to print a block-bracket and affix it to the open holes on the towing plate. These are 16mm and will dimply fix a bracket to it. This means that I can attach the camera to the print and run the wiring up through the hole that was made for the pigs tail wiring. You can find the print, here.

The design is simple, it is a 20cm long oblong that will be printed with the 16mm holes in place. I also decided to create a notch, above the camera, to hold the wiring down for tidiness. It needed to be of at least 10mm thick to support the camera and keep it from performing a heavy, pesky, wobble! Please note that the camera will not sit at the centre of the van. I could have gone with a central camera, but I need it for distance to move backwards, not sideways. It is 55mm off of centre, and for many, the closest to centre, the better, but I am only installing it for that purpose…and because it came with the media system!

Off centre, but will need an extra bracket!

Once the wire was fed into the channels, I found that the RCA cable was too short. I needed to extend it with a leftover cable from years ago and a female-to-female adapter. I do believe that I have all I need…now! Fitting it has been a bit of a pain! The grounding was playing up and I still trying to trace the problem. However, it is fitted and looks okay. I am still unsure about it, there, but I do know that I need to create an additional bracket piece to raise it up, further. When a trailer is hitched up, the camera’s body is running too close to the tow-ball. I might now model a fixing that bring it back to the centre, anyway! For now, that’s where it is. A couple of changes and fixing the tempremental grounding is a must. Let’s see how that goes!
