Each year, we are bombarded with new heatwaves. Many countries are set for these hot spells, having cooling installed into their buildings, ready to go. In the UK, we are not used to this, and generally live in a mixed climate. Each year, we are clearly adding more fans, with 2026 looking like the year that we start adding full air-conditioning units into our homes. The recent wave was very hot, hitting more than ‘35 degrees‘ in a lot of the country, our mindset is not ready, and we will do the usual scramble to survive.
Commercially, cooling units have been added to buildings, but in the home, it is simply a rare thing. I did notice that some homes were adding floor-standing appliances to help with the heat, with this year set to increase, by many. I do wonder what our plan will be as the seasons become ever more unhinged. the sun has a habit of making people become silly and is something akin to the melting of common-sense. Is it the humble air-conditioning unit’s shunning of the old fans that will help us to find solace in our new climate? Only time will see!
